Story and goal
Kigetsu tells the story of the founding gods of Japan - the kami - in ancient times. It is based on the Kojiki, a series of myths about the origin of kami and of the Japanese isles, thus called Shinkoku, "the land of gods". Kami are celestial spirits which detain magic powers, but there are also earthbound kami, who interfere directly with the destiny of humans. Henceforth, the game takes place into two different worlds : the celestial world, represented by a Taiji (Yin Yang) and the terrestrial world, represented by a map of Japan.

Kigetsu is a semi cooperative game. The players are kami and their mission is to give and spread life to the earth. To achieve this, they will use counters, which represents vital energy (ki). The game stops when all the map of Japan is covered with counters.

If counters are scarce, the players have to challenge dark powers by entering the celestial world. The ki thus changes into kigetsu, "moon energy" : under the ultraviolet lamp, the symbol of a moon is revelaed on the counters, which changes the way of playing.

At the end, the most powerful kami wins, that is to say, the player who gained the biggest number of cards. Those cards represent shintai, characters who allow kami to reincarnate temporarily and to increase their influence in the world.
